Gazing up at the Church of St. Peter & Paul, can you sense the echoes of those who sought solace and education within its walls? The Church of St. Peter & Paul stands as a testament to the resilience and faith of a community. In 1822, Phibsborough was a place of poverty and hardship. Concerned residents, seeing the lack of a Catholic school, took action. A committee formed in October 1822, leading to the construction of schools on the very site where the church now stands. These schools opened in 1826. The Church of St. Peter & Paul began its life within the upper story of this school building, a converted chapel where Mass was first celebrated on Trinity Sunday in 1827. The Vincentian Community took charge of St. Peter’s in 1838, marking a significant turning point in its history. The Vincentians quickly expanded the church’s services. The growing congregation soon outgrew the small chapel. In 1841, a public meeting, presided over by Daniel O’Connell, raised funds to expand the church. This meeting itself was historic, being the first public meeting of Dublin Catholics for a charitable purpose. Further growth in the 1850s and 1860s led to even grander plans for expansion in 1862. A central tower and transepts were erected. Unfortunately, the tower’s construction became mired in a lawsuit and had to be dismantled. Interestingly, the stones from the ill-fated tower were used in the construction of the Allied Irish Bank building and Murphy’s pub, giving them their distinctive “ecclesiastical” look. The Church of St. Peter & Paul as we see it today wasn’t completed until 1911, thanks to the efforts of Fr. Joseph Geoghegan. It was inaugurated debt-free, a remarkable feat. Even a passing remark by Cardinal Moran of Australia, who noted the lack of a Catholic steeple visible from his window in Drumcondra, spurred Archbishop Walsh to contribute more funds, leading to the completion of the spire in 1907. The Church of St. Peter & Paul is more than just a building. It’s a symbol of community spirit, resilience, and the enduring power of faith.
