“Did you know that the Church of Scientology in Los Angeles was the very first Scientology Church in the world?”
The Church of Scientology of Los Angeles stands before you. It is more than just a building. It represents the genesis of a global movement.
Let’s step back in time to February 18, 1954. Several Los Angeles area Scientologists came together. They founded the very first Church of Scientology. It began in a small building in Glendale California.
The Church of Scientology quickly outgrew its humble beginnings. Over the next ten years it moved twice. It needed larger spaces to accommodate its growing congregation.
By 1965, the church had expanded so much that it split into two organizations. These were named Day and Foundation. Day operated during the weekdays. Foundation took over evenings and weekends. This allowed the Church of Scientology to serve its parishioners 14 hours a day seven days a week. Staff from other churches came to Los Angeles to study. They wanted to become spiritual counselors.
In 1977, the Church of Scientology moved to its current location on Sunset Boulevard. This became its landmark home.
But the story doesn’t end there. In 1992, a major renovation project began. The aim was to completely transform the Los Angeles Church of Scientology.
In early 1995, the project was completed. The grand opening coincided with the church’s 41st anniversary on February 18, 1995. The renovated Church of Scientology now boasts over 66000 square feet of space.
Inside, you would find a chapel and auditorium. There is also a bookstore stocked with Scientology materials. Course rooms provide spaces for studying Scientology. A library houses a wealth of knowledge. Staff offices support the church’s operations. The Hubbard Guidance Center offers Scientology and Dianetics counseling.
Originally founded in 1954, this Church holds a special place in history. Since 1977, it has served Los Angeles and the oldest and largest Scientologist community. This is done from its building on Sunset Boulevard.
