“What began with a small group of Black communicants?” That’s the question that echoes as we stand before the Church of Saint Simon Stock. This Roman Catholic parish church is under the authority of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of New York. It is located at 2191 Valentine Avenue in the Bronx.
The Church of Saint Simon Stock has a rich history. It was established in 1919. Since its founding, it has been continuously staffed by the Carmelite Fathers. The parish of Saint Simon Stock was founded by the Irish Carmelites of Our Lady of Scapular Mount Carmel in lower Manhattan.
The first Mass was offered in a two-story frame house. This house was located at “Carmel Hill” at 182nd Street and Valentine Avenue. The first mass took place on Palm Sunday, March 28, 1920. Construction on the church began in 1921. The construction was interrupted because they needed to build a school. On occasion, sermons were given in Irish Gaelic.
Let’s take a moment to acknowledge some of the past leaders. Fr. William G. O’Farrell served from 1920 to 1925. Fr. Elias Vella followed from 1925 to 1926. Fr. Louis Gerhard then led from 1926 to 1929. These are just a few of the many pastors who have guided this church.
Interestingly, the Church of Saint Joseph merged with the Church of Saint Simon Stock. Saint Joseph’s was located on Bathgate Avenue in the Bronx. It was founded in 1873 to serve the German Catholics. Due to dwindling attendance and a crumbling building, St. Joseph’s closed. The congregation merged with Saint Simon Stock. Saint Joseph’s church building was desacralized in November 2017.
Now, the Church of Saint Simon Stock continues to serve its community. It stands as a testament to faith, community, and perseverance.
