Hidden amidst the vibrant chaos of Times Square stands the Church of Saint Mary the Virgin. Its serene presence offers a captivating contrast to the bustling energy surrounding it. This isn’t just any church. The Church of Saint Mary the Virgin is a significant landmark a testament to faith and architectural prowess.

Founded in 1868 the Church of Saint Mary the Virgin had humble beginnings. Father Thomas McKee Brown a visionary priest envisioned a church that fully embraced Catholic traditions within the Episcopal Church. His ambition led him to secure land near Longacre Square later renamed Times Square. The initial church building at 228 West 45th Street served the congregation for years.

However the congregation’s growth necessitated a larger space. A generous legacy from Miss Sara L Cooke provided the funds to construct a magnificent new edifice. The Church of Saint Mary the Virgin’s current structure a stunning example of French Gothic architecture was completed in 1895. Designed by Napoleon LeBrun & Sons its construction was innovative. The use of a concealed steel skeleton was revolutionary for church construction of that era. The beautiful limestone facade and the brick-faced adjoining buildings are a testament to this innovative design.

The Church of Saint Mary the Virgin’s interior is equally impressive. Vivid colors adorn the space cobalt blue vaulting accented with gold stars. These were part of a restoration project undertaken in 1996-97. The high altar originally from the earlier church remains a focal point. Its solemn liturgies and the impressive choral and organ music create a powerful spiritual atmosphere. The copious use of incense has earned the church a playful nickname “Smoky Mary’s”.

Today the Church of Saint Mary the Virgin is known for its rich history and its vibrant community. It continues to be a beacon of faith a place of worship and a significant architectural and cultural landmark in the heart of Midtown Manhattan. Its unique blend of tradition and modernity makes it a truly special place. A place worth exploring and remembering. A quiet sanctuary in a vibrant city.
