The story of the Church of Saint Clare began in 1918. It started as a mission of St. Patrick’s Church in Richmondtown. Pastor Charles J. Parks recognized the need for a Catholic presence in the growing Great Kills neighborhood.
In 1921, the first church building was dedicated. It was a modest wooden structure designed in the Colonial style. Architects Eggers and Higgins created this simple yet elegant space. It marked the beginning of a dedicated place of worship.
By 1925, St. Clare’s had grown enough to become an independent parish. The patronal saint was chosen in memory of Clare Parks. She was a deceased member of the founder’s family. This personal connection added a layer of intimacy to the church’s identity.
As Great Kills’ population surged in the 1950s, a larger church became necessary. In 1959, a new octagonal church was completed. This Colonial Revival structure could accommodate 700 people. The original church was moved and became a chapel.
The new Church of Saint Clare also included a new school wing. The expanded school and church reflected the parish’s commitment to education and community growth. St. Clare School opened in 1936 and continues to provide rigorous academic training.
The architecture of the Church of Saint Clare is noteworthy. The octagonal shape is patterned after the Church of St. Charles Borromeo in Newark. The open, domed interior is inspired by the first Catholic cathedral in the United States.
Inside the Church of Saint Clare, you’ll find beautiful stained-glass windows. Michael A. Zappalorti created these windows. They portray the life of St. Clare in 13th-century Italy. The windows add color and depth to the worship space.
The Church of Saint Clare also boasts a magnificent pipe organ. M.P. Möller, Inc. originally built the organ in 1959. The Peragallo Pipe Organ Company expanded it in 2002. Its geometric pipework enhances the church’s acoustics.
St. Clare’s has faced many challenges. After the September 11 attacks, the church community mourned the loss of 29 parishioners. An eternal flame now burns on the church property in their memory.
In 2012, Hurricane Sandy caused extensive damage to Staten Island. The Church of Saint Clare provided assistance to those affected. This demonstrated the parish’s unwavering commitment to community service.
The COVID-19 pandemic also deeply impacted St. Clare’s. The parish lost many members including two beloved pastors. Despite these losses, the community has remained strong in their faith.
Today, the Church of Saint Clare continues to serve as a spiritual home for over 7,000 families. Its ministries and programs offer support to people of all ages. The parish is a vital part of the Great Kills community.
