The Church of Pentecost has a fascinating history. It all started with Rev. James McKeown. He was an Irish missionary. He came to the Gold Coast, now Ghana, in 1937. He was sent by the Apostolic Church of the UK. His mission was to assist a group of believers. Rev. Peter Newman led them.
Differences in beliefs, particularly about divine healing, caused a split. This led to the formation of the Gold Coast Apostolic Church in 1953, led by Rev. James McKeown.
When Ghana gained independence in 1957 the church’s name changed. It became the Ghana Apostolic Church. Conflicts persisted. Ghana’s President Kwame Nkrumah intervened. He advised the church to adopt a new name. This was to promote peace within the Pentecostal community. On August 1, 1962, The Church of Pentecost was officially established.
The Church of Pentecost grew significantly. It spread to many countries. By 2019, it had reached 104 countries. Its global membership was over 3.4 million. These members belonged to more than 28,000 congregations. In Ghana, young people make up a large portion of the church.
The Church of Pentecost now operates in over 170 nations. It has more than 4.2 million members worldwide. The church has over 137,000 officers and almost 2,500 ordained ministers.
Apostle Eric Nyamekye currently leads The Church of Pentecost as its Chairman. He was re-elected in 2023.
Consider the Asenemaso Central Assembly. It’s named Bethel. This assembly shows the dedication within the Church of Pentecost. It started in a classroom in 1998. After years of hard work, a permanent church building was completed. It features a 1200-seater auditorium. The dedication of this building shows the commitment to faith and community.
