The Church of Our Lady of Sorrows stands proudly on Pitt Street. It has a rich history. It served German Catholic immigrants on the Lower East Side. This was once known as Kleindeutschland or Little Germany.

Founded in 1867 as Our Lady of the Seven Dolors Church the Church of Our Lady of Sorrows was initially staffed by Capuchin Friars. It served as a national parish for many German Catholics. Later Italian and then Hispanic immigrants found a home here. The church’s name reflects this evolving community. It is also known as Nuestra Señora de los Dolores.

Archbishop John McCloskey dedicated the Church of Our Lady of Sorrows on September 6 1868. Architect Henry Engelbert designed the building. Its construction lasted from 1867 to 1868. Imagine the craftsmen the sounds the smells as this magnificent structure arose.

The Church of Our Lady of Sorrows wasn’t just a place of worship. It was a hub. It saw joyous weddings and solemn funerals. It provided refuge. For example in 1893 an abandoned baby was found within its walls.

The church also had a school. Sadly it closed in 2011 as part of Archdiocese-wide closures.
