In 1907, a seed of faith was planted in the Fordham section of the Bronx. This seed blossomed into the Church of Our Lady of Mercy. The original Church of Our Lady of Mercy stood on Fordham University grounds. It eventually reverted to its original purpose. This created a need for a new church for the local Catholic community. These parishioners had long attended the old church within the college gates. Reverend C. Rigney, formerly of St. Joseph’s Church in Staten Island, was tasked with establishing this new parish. He began his work in 1892. His first church wasn’t grand. It was a repurposed clubhouse of the Tammany Society, altered to serve a higher purpose. The Church of Our Lady of Mercy community grew. Reverend Rigney received assistance from Reverend Edmund W. Cronin. Later, Reverends Michael F. Horan and James A. Collins joined the effort. By 1914, the congregation had swelled to around 1,000 souls. The church property was valued at $65,000, with an $11,000 debt. The current Church of Our Lady of Mercy building, a testament to Gothic Revival architecture, opened its doors in 1910. This architectural style, with its pointed arches and intricate details, speaks to a rich history and enduring faith. Imagine the community gathering here for the first time, the sunlight streaming through the stained-glass windows, illuminating the faces filled with hope. The Church of Our Lady of Mercy wasn’t just a place of worship. It was a cornerstone of the community. It fostered education and spiritual growth. The parish also oversaw Our Lady of Mercy School, a parochial school bustling with young minds eager to learn. In 1914, seven Ursuline nuns and two lay teachers guided 132 boys and 193 girls. The school, located on Webster Avenue, was a significant investment, built at a cost of $200,000. The renowned architect John V. Van Pelt designed the building. The Church of Our Lady of Mercy has witnessed countless baptisms, weddings, and funerals. It has been a steadfast presence through joy and sorrow. It stands as a testament to the enduring power of faith and community. It’s more than just bricks and mortar. It’s a living testament to the generations who have found solace and inspiration within its walls.
