Imagine a time when Irish immigrants flocked to this very spot. This is the Church of Our Lady of Guadalupe and St. Bernard. It stands as a testament to faith and community in Manhattan’s Greenwich Village.

The Church of Our Lady of Guadalupe and St. Bernard has a unique story. It is a tale of two parishes becoming one. St. Bernard’s Parish was established in 1868. It served a congregation of mostly Irish immigrants. Our Lady of Guadalupe Parish followed in 1902. It became the first Spanish-speaking Catholic parish in New York City. This served working-class Spaniards in what was then “Little Spain”. In 2003 these two parishes merged. This created the united Parish of Our Lady of Guadalupe and St. Bernard.

Let’s step back to the late 19th century. St. Bernard’s Church was built between 1873 and 1875. Patrick Charles Keely designed it. He was a prolific Irish-born architect. The church was the first to be consecrated by an American Cardinal. That was Archbishop John McCloskey.

The design of St. Bernard’s features English and French Gothic Revival styles. Some even call it Ruskinian Gothic. Twin towers and a triple-portal entrance stand out. A rose window completes the facade. Inside, a U-shaped gallery overlooks the space. Figurative stained-glass windows add color. These were crafted in the style of Mayers of Munich. The Church of Our Lady of Guadalupe and St. Bernard also has at least one Tiffany window.

An interesting detail involves Mary Catherine Dannat Starr. In 1868 she started a sewing school for girls. This took place at St. Bernard’s. She wanted to teach them skills. The goal was to improve their lives. Starr later founded the Sisters of the Divine Compassion.

The Church of Our Lady of Guadalupe and St. Bernard boasts a magnificent organ. It was built in 1891 by J.H. & C.S. Odell. This replaced a smaller organ that burned in 1890. The organ’s pipes are displayed in three sections. These overlook a two-manual console.

After the 2003 merger, the interior was redecorated. It was painted with art from Our Lady of Guadalupe parish. The reredos now features scenes of Our Lady of Guadalupe. You can see the Blessed Juan Diego depicted there. The modern Basilica of Our Lady of Guadalupe is also represented.

Today, the Church of Our Lady of Guadalupe and St. Bernard continues to serve. It offers Mass in both English and Spanish. It stands as a symbol of unity. This is where two cultures meet. Irish and Spanish heritage blend here. This creates a vibrant community of faith. The Church of Our Lady of Guadalupe and St. Bernard is a landmark. It reflects the ever-evolving story of New York City.
