Whispers of a Russian dome echo around the Church of Mary Immaculate, Refuge of Sinners. Here we stand before this grand church on Lower Rathmines Road, its dome a beacon visible across Dublin. The Church of Mary Immaculate, Refuge of Sinners has witnessed much in its lifetime. Originally completed in 1856, designed by Patrick Byrne with interior sculptures by Farrell & Sons, it was later extended by John O’Neill and William Henry Byrne. Tragedy struck in 1920 when a fire ravaged the church, destroying the original dome. The dome you see today was rebuilt in 1923, a project overseen by Ralph Henry Byrne, son of William Henry Byrne. It’s a magnificent structure, 61 feet in diameter at the base and rising 48 feet above the roof. With the lantern, the entire structure reaches 160 feet. Remarkably, the church continued to operate during the reconstruction, a temporary roof sheltering worshippers below. The dome’s visibility is striking. From afar, it’s a landmark, a symbol of faith. Yet, as you approach the Church of Mary Immaculate, Refuge of Sinners, the main building almost obscures the dome from view. Only glimpses are visible from the side and rear, giving the impression of a hidden giant. Inside, the dome’s presence is undeniable, its scale dwarfing the lower building. Once you leave the church grounds, however, the dome reappears, reclaiming its place in the Dublin skyline.
