Approaching the Church of Martyr St. Abanoub, imagine a young boy, barely a teenager, standing firm against the might of the Roman Empire. This is the story of St. Abanoub, the child martyr. The Church of Martyr St.Abanoub stands as a testament to his unwavering faith. Abanoub, born in Nehisa, Egypt, was raised by devout Christian parents. They instilled in him a deep love for God. Sadly, they died when he was still young, leaving him orphaned. At the tender age of twelve, during the persecutions of Diocletian, Abanoub heard a powerful sermon. The priest urged his congregation to remain steadfast in their faith. Inspired, Abanoub received the Holy Sacraments. He prayed for guidance, seeking a way to proclaim his belief. He gave away all his worldly possessions to the poor. Then he embarked on a journey to Samanoud. On his way, he encountered the Archangel Michael. The Archangel foretold Abanoub’s impending suffering but assured him of God’s presence. In Samanoud, Abanoub boldly confessed his faith before the Roman governor, even denouncing the governor’s idols. The enraged governor ordered Abanoub to be flogged. Despite the brutal beating, Abanoub was miraculously healed by the Archangel Michael. Imprisoned with other Christians, Abanoub’s courage inspired them. They too, later faced martyrdom. The governor, determined to break Abanoub’s spirit, took him to Athribis. There, he was hung upside down from a ship’s mast. As the soldiers mocked and tormented him, a divine intervention occurred. The soldiers were struck with blindness, and the governor became paralyzed. They begged Abanoub for mercy, promising to convert if healed. Abanoub agreed, stating the miracle would only occur in Athribis as a testament to Christ’s power. Upon reaching Athribis, they were all healed. They publicly proclaimed their newfound faith, discarding their uniforms. This enraged the governor of Athribis, leading to their execution. Abanoub endured further torture, including being whipped and placed on a burning bed. Each time, he emerged unscathed, further strengthening the faith of those who witnessed these miracles. Even when his hands and feet were severed, an angel miraculously restored them. Hundreds converted upon witnessing this divine intervention. The governor, desperate to silence Abanoub, consulted magicians. They suggested throwing him into a pit of venomous snakes. However, just as God protected Daniel in the lions’ den, Abanoub remained unharmed. One of the snakes even coiled itself around the governor’s neck. Terrified, he pleaded for mercy in Jesus’ name. Abanoub prayed, and the snake released its grip. This event led to even more conversions, including the magicians themselves. Finally, on the advice of an advisor, the governor ordered Abanoub’s execution. He was beheaded. A faithful man named Julius retrieved Abanoub’s body, wrapping it in linen and returning it to Nehisa for burial. Years later, in 960 AD, his relics were transferred to St. Virgin Mary’s Church in Samanoud. The Church of Martyr St.Abanoub reminds us of the power of faith, even in the face of adversity. The story of this young boy’s courage continues to inspire generations.
