Did you know that the Church of Holy Rosary is more famously known as the Infant Jesus Church? This charming church stands at the meeting point of six roads in Slave Island. But don’t let the name Slave Island fool you. Slaves were kept here until the 19th century. That is why it was generally known as Slave Island.
Now, let’s step closer to the Church of Holy Rosary. You’ll notice a statue of the Infant Jesus on the front left. Many people believe it has miraculous powers. This belief draws countless visitors seeking blessings.
The Church of Holy Rosary may be small but it is beautiful. It reflects a typical Sri Lankan church design. Broad open-air aisles surround the outside. These spaces offer shelter from the heat and rain. Additional crowds can sit here.
Look above the entrance canopy. You will see a large replica of the Infant Jesus statue. The original statue is on the front left-hand side of the church. The statue is of El Nino. It is a popular devotion site. Thousands of devotees visit the Church of Holy Rosary every year. People come from across the island and even from India.
The Church of Holy Rosary also has strong connections to the Shrine of Our Lady Madhu in Mannar. It is considered the holiest Catholic shrine in Sri Lanka. Many pilgrims visit both churches on their spiritual journey.
On Fridays, the mass at the Church of Holy Rosary is attended by hundreds of city workers. The church uniquely celebrates mass in three languages on Sundays. Tamil mass is at 6.30 am. Sinhala follows at 8 am. English mass takes place at 9.30 am and 6.30 pm.
Near the Church of Holy Rosary on Church Street, you will find the Rosary Church school. It is a modest bright blue building. This school is popular, especially among the Tamil population.
