Damaged but not defeated that’s the story of the Church of Compassion in South Philadelphia. This wasn’t always a place of quiet online services. The Church of Compassion started in October 1984 under Pastor Sam Slaffey. It was a vibrant hub for the community. The church offered daycare free clothing a food pantry and even biblical counseling. It was a true refuge for many. Sadly tragedy struck. The pandemic hit and the church closed. Pastor and First Lady Slaffey became ill and passed away. Worse yet squatters moved in causing extensive damage. They trashed the place stealing copper pipes leading to water damage and mold. The church was uninsured. The building remained closed. Services and Bible studies went online. But hope arrived in February 2023. Pastor Rahiam Bango took over. He and the new board secured the building showing compassion even to the squatters helping them find shelter. A four-phase plan was created to reopen. Phase one the By Faith Partners campaign raised enough money for professional cleaning. Yet 170000 dollars are still needed. The Church of Compassion continues to serve its community. They distributed back-to-school supplies. They engage with families weekly. They provide hope for the future. This resilient church embodies its name. It continues to show compassion despite incredible challenges. Their story is one of faith perseverance and the enduring spirit of community. Their journey toward reopening is a testament to their dedication to serving others. The Church of Compassion is more than a building it’s a beacon of hope in South Philadelphia.
