What if I told you that the spirit of the Fifth Ward Church of Christ lives on right here? You see, the church we’re standing before, Church of Christ Westward Street, shares roots with this historic congregation. Back in the 1920s, a small group of Christians in Houston’s Black community felt the need for a dedicated Church of Christ. They started modestly, holding services in homes and even local restaurants! Their faith resonated, and soon, with the guidance of Heights Church of Christ and the fiery preaching of Evangelist Marshall Keeble, the Fifth Ward Church of Christ was born. It was 1932, and they had 81 members strong. This church wasn’t content with just existing. They built their own sanctuary, brick by brick, thanks to the generosity of members like T. H. York and the Woodwards. Even more inspiring, they gave birth to other congregations, spreading their faith throughout Houston and beyond! The legacy of their dedication and passion for the teachings of Christ lives on, echoing right here at Church of Christ Westward Street.
