South Main was founded on November 15, 1903. Thirty-two charter members established it after a series of revival services. Back then, the church was on the southern edge of the city. Now, it stands in Houston’s geographic bullseye.
One of South Main’s first ministries was establishing a Baptist Sanatorium. This 18-bed facility became Houston’s Memorial Hospital. It eventually evolved into today’s Memorial Hermann Healthcare System. South Main continues to support medical needs. It maintains apartments for those seeking medical care in Houston. The church also runs medical missions in Peru and Kenya.
The South Main Baptist Church Sanctuary was built between 1925 and 1930. It remains one of Houston’s most beautiful spaces. The Sanctuary is recognized as a premier venue for choral music. South Main’s music ministry has inspired worshippers. It has also provided music education for generations. They even sing out of books in parts.
The Sanctuary’s design reflects Catholic aesthetic sentiments. This was an unusual choice for a Baptist church in the 1920s. The congregation has been a leader in ecumenical partnerships.
From 1935 to 1939, the church served as the campus of the University of Houston. This lasted until the University’s current campus was completed. Today, South Main partners with MacGregor Elementary School. They encourage teachers and mentor students. The church provides needed supplies. South Main’s commitment to sharing the Gospel led to planting seven mission congregations. These congregations spread across the Houston metropolitan area. Locations include Almeda, Algoa, Addicks, Willow Meadows, Sugar Creek, and Stafford. For over 50 years, South Main has welcomed strangers through SMILE. SMILE is the South Main International Learning Experience, an ESL teaching ministry. For the past decade, they’ve ministered to unhoused neighbors through Manna.
South Main’s legacy of service and innovation continues. The Family and Adult Ministries are a cornerstone. They plan to make South Main an ideal place to grow and learn.
