Isnt it intriguing how faith can bring people together? Right here, in the heart of Brisbane’s bustling CBD, stands the Ann Street Church of Christ. This grand old dame has witnessed over a century of Brisbane’s history. Established in 1883 by a group of devout Christians, it wasn’t always a Church of Christ congregation. The building itself, constructed in 1881, originally housed the United Methodist Free Church. It was in 1898, seeking a permanent home, that the burgeoning Church of Christ congregation, led by William and Martha Clapham, purchased the building. Their investment, a hefty £1,100 at the time, secured a beacon of faith for generations to come. The Ann Street Church of Christ became the ‘mother church’, its influence extending beyond its own walls, playing a key role in establishing other Church of Christ congregations in the burgeoning suburbs of Brisbane. Imagine the bustling Sunday services, the echoes of hymns, the community gatherings that have filled this space over the years. The Ann Street Church of Christ stands as a testament to the enduring power of faith and community.
