In a bustling corner of Kumasi, a beacon of faith stands tall: the Church of Christ in Asafo. What began as an interdenominational prayer group called the “Good St. Anna Prayer Group” transformed into a cornerstone of the Churches of Christ in Ghana. The year was 1971. A minister named Thomas Kofi Dadzie led the group. He encountered the teachings of the Bomso Church of Christ and was baptized in 1973. Dadzie began sharing these new beliefs with his prayer group. This led to a fascinating mix of resistance and curiosity among members like Anthony Mensah, Bismark Abeeku Nyarko, and Akua Nago. Members of the Bomso Church began visiting the prayer group. They engaged in discussions and Bible studies. This exchange of ideas, led by individuals like S. B. Obeng and Kingsley Adu, gradually opened the group to the Churches of Christ doctrine. By January 1974, the group, now largely converted, decided to worship at Oforikrom. They felt they could finally establish their own place of worship. This decision met resistance from Bomso Church leaders. They offered Dadzie admission to the Ghana Bible College, possibly as a way to retain influence. After a series of tense meetings, a missionary named Royce Reynolds intervened in February 1974. The Bomso leaders finally consented. In March 1974, the Oforikrom Church of Christ held its first service. The Church of Christ in Asafo stands as a testament to the power of faith, community, and transformation. It’s a place where the echoes of prayer meetings past blend with the vibrant worship of today’s congregation. The Church of Christ isn’t just a building. It’s a living story, woven into the very fabric of Kumasi.
