For decades the Filipino Christian Fellowship searched for a permanent home. They moved from Little Manila to Bunker Hill then to Temple-Figueroa. Each move was a reflection of the challenges faced by early Filipino immigrants. They faced discrimination and displacement due to urban renewal projects.
Imagine the resilience of those early members. They were forced to move again and again. Yet their faith remained steadfast. Their dedication to their community never wavered. The acquisition of the former Union Avenue M.E. Church in 1950 was a turning point. It marked the start of a new era. It gave them a place to call home. More importantly it provided a central gathering place for the growing Filipino community.
More than just a church the building became a community center. Its basement social hall hosted countless events. It offered support to various local groups. The Filipino Christian Church wasn’t merely a sanctuary. It was the birthplace of many pivotal organizations. The Filipino Community of Los Angeles later the Filipino American Community of Los Angeles or FACLA was founded there. This organization was one of the earliest Filipino American organizations in the entire country. Members also founded the local chapter of the Filipino American National Historical Society.
The church even provided rehearsal space for the Filipino Cultural School. This volunteer dance and cultural troupe shared their traditions within its walls. The building stood as a vibrant hub of social religious and cultural life. It served as a catalyst for the development of Filipinotown itself. The Church at Philippi became a beacon.
