“Did you bring your binoculars?” I ask. The St. Thomas Cathedral Basilica stands before us. It’s a beacon of faith and history in Chennai. This is no ordinary church. It holds the tomb of St. Thomas, one of Jesus’ apostles.

The Santhome Cathedral Basilica is particularly special. It’s one of the few churches in the world built over an apostle’s tomb. St. Thomas arrived in India in 52 AD. He spread the Gospel and lived here for nearly twenty years. He met his martyrdom in 72 AD.
The Portuguese first built a church here in the 16th century. The British rebuilt it in 1893. The result is the magnificent white Gothic structure we see today. Its spires reach towards the heavens. The basilica stands proudly near Marina Beach.
Inside, a beautiful stained glass window tells St. Thomas’s story. The central hall features 14 wooden plaques. These depict scenes from the last days of Christ. A 3-foot-high statue of Virgin Mary graces the cathedral. It was brought from Portugal in 1543.

Some bone fragments of the apostle are also preserved here. For converting the wife and son of a prefect, the holy apostle was locked up in prison, suffered torture, and was finally pierced with a spear while praying at the alter on top of Big Mount.
Marco Polo visited the tomb in 1293. He wrote about the miraculous healing powers of the sand from the tomb. Pilgrims once took this sand home. They kept it with devotion.
