Consider the striking red bricks before you. This is the Notre-Dame Cathedral Basilica of Saigon. Its story began long ago during the French colonial era.

The French colonists wanted a grand church. It would serve as a place of worship for their community. Construction started in 1863. The Notre-Dame Cathedral was completed in 1880.

The French carefully selected the location. It stands in the heart of Ho Chi Minh City. The site was once home to a Vietnamese pagoda.

The Notre-Dame Cathedral’s architecture is neo-Romanesque. Jules Bourard, a French architect, designed the basilica. Materials came all the way from France. The red bricks are from Toulouse. They give the building its distinctive color.

Look up at the twin bell towers. Each tower reaches almost 60 meters. Iron spires top the towers. For a time, they were the tallest structures in the city.

Step inside the Notre-Dame Cathedral. Notice the stained glass windows. These intricate windows depict biblical scenes. They were crafted in France. The large interior can hold 1200 people. Wooden pews and a marble altar add to the ambiance.

The Notre-Dame Cathedral is more than a religious site. It symbolizes the French colonial era in Vietnam. It reflects cultural diversity. The basilica has been the seat of the Catholic archdiocese of Saigon. It remains a central place of worship.

In front of the Notre-Dame Cathedral, you would have seen a bronze statue. It depicted Bishop Pigneau de Behaine with Prince Canh. The statue was removed in 1945. In 1959, a statue of Our Lady of Peace was placed here.

In 1962, the Notre-Dame Cathedral gained basilica status. Its official title became Notre-Dame Cathedral Basilica of Saigon. Locals often call it Duc Ba Cathedral. This is due to the statue in front.

Interestingly, all the building materials came from France. Even the tiles have markings. These markings indicate their origin from Marseille.

Have you heard the story of the weeping statue? In 2005, people claimed the Virgin Mary statue shed tears. Thousands flocked to see this supposed miracle. Authorities had to control the crowds.

The Notre-Dame Cathedral is undergoing renovations from 2017 to 2027. This will ensure its preservation for future generations.

The Notre-Dame Cathedral stands as a testament to history. It shows architectural splendor and spiritual devotion. Take a moment to appreciate its beauty. Remember the stories it holds. It reflects Saigon’s vibrant past.
