“Do the right thing”. That’s not just a saying. It’s the motto of Chula Vista High School.

Chula Vista High School opened its doors in 1947. It started at Brown Field Municipal Airport. Imagine 650 students learning in a temporary campus.

By 1949 Chula Vista High School had grown. Over 900 students filled grades 10 through 12. A new school was built at Fourth Avenue and K Street.

Now Chula Vista High School serves over 2600 students. That includes grades 9 through 12. About 580 students are in the School for the Creative and Performing Arts. It is called SCPA.

The school is proud of its traditions. It wants students and families to feel like they belong. That’s why “Home of Champions” is another motto.

Staff at Chula Vista High School are committed. They want to empower teaching and learning. They believe in doing the right thing for the students and the community.

Chula Vista High School’s athletic teams are called the Spartans. Their colors are blue and white. They compete in the Metropolitan Conference.

Many notable people went to Chula Vista High School. Billy Casper graduated in 1950. He became a professional golfer and U.S. Open winner. Tim Danielson graduated in 1966. He was an American middle-distance runner. Sports Illustrated recognized him. J. Michael Straczynski graduated in 1972. He created “Babylon 5”. Robert Alan Lopez graduated in 1977. He is a singer-songwriter known as El Vez. Charisma Carpenter graduated in 1988. She acted in “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” and “Angel”.

Donnie Edwards graduated in 1991. He had a career in the NFL. Grey DeLisle graduated in 1991. She does voice acting in animated TV series. Mario Lopez graduated in 1991. He is an actor and TV host known for “Saved by the Bell”. Lee Kohse graduated in 1992. He creates comic books. Mary Castillo graduated in 1992. She writes mystery novels. Ty Wigginton graduated in 1995. He played baseball in the MLB.

In 2023 Chris Moya was honored. They were one of San Diego’s Most Remarkable Teens. Chris founded the Genders and Sexualities Club and the Chula Closet Club. These clubs create safe spaces for students.

In 2024 Sweetwater Union High School District launched a voter registration campaign. It targeted high school students. The campaign visited all district high schools. It helped eligible students register to vote.

Chula Vista High School prepares students for the future. It offers skills needed for college, employment, and government service. It supports students to be positive members of society.
