Have you heard whispers of Chùa Vạn Thọ, a sanctuary nestled along the bustling Hoàng Sa street in Ho Chi Minh City? Chùa Vạn Thọ isn’t just a temple. It’s a beacon of hope, a place where spirituality intertwines with the healing touch of traditional medicine. The story of Chùa Vạn Thọ begins in the early 20th century, around 1917, in a then-remote area characterized by marshes and lush vegetation. It started as a humble dwelling, an “Am Trang,” where devotees sought spiritual refuge. As the community grew around this spiritual center, the area became known as “Xóm chùa,” or “Temple Hamlet.” The year 1942 marked a significant turning point. Chùa Vạn Thọ underwent reconstruction, solidifying its presence. The temple’s name, “Vạn Thọ,” reflects the aspirations for longevity and prosperity it embodies. Over the decades, Chùa Vạn Thọ continued to evolve. In 1980, Hòa Thượng Thích Thanh Sản became the temple’s trụ trì, or abbot. He recognized the temple’s potential to serve the community beyond spiritual guidance. He established a free clinic specializing in musculoskeletal ailments. For over 40 years, this clinic has provided relief to countless individuals, particularly those with limited financial resources. Chùa Vạn Thọ became known as the “free hospital” of Saigon, its reputation extending beyond the city limits to neighboring provinces. The treatments at Chùa Vạn Thọ are deeply rooted in traditional Vietnamese medicine. Hòa Thượng Thích Thanh Sản developed unique herbal remedies, primarily using cây nga truật and other medicinal plants. The clinic’s approach is personalized, with treatments adjusted based on the severity of each patient’s condition. The main hall of Chùa Vạn Thọ houses a serene and respectfully adorned Buddha statue. This serves as a focal point, surrounded by other revered figures. The temple’s commitment to helping those in need continues. Despite his advanced age, Hòa Thượng Thích Thanh Sản’s legacy lives on through the monks he trained. They continue to offer compassionate care and traditional healing practices. Chùa Vạn Thọ stands as a testament to the power of community, compassion, and the enduring legacy of Vietnamese traditions.
