Nestled in the heart of Ho Chi Minh City, Chùa Tự Quang beckons. This Buddhist temple holds a captivating story, whispering tales of resilience and spiritual devotion. Chùa Tự Quang’s story begins in the late 19th century. It was founded by Tổ Minh Quang – Phó Chiếu (the 38th Lâm Tế patriarch) in the 1890s on a wooded plot in Tân Thới Nhì village. The original structure was replaced in 1894 with the building you see today. Chùa Tự Quang became a sanctuary for the local community throughout the 20th century. It offered a place for spiritual solace and communal gatherings. During the tumultuous years of the Vietnam War, the temple also served as a shelter and meeting place for revolutionaries. Today, Chùa Tự Quang is under the direct administration of Hòa thượng Thích Huệ Minh. He ensures the temple continues to serve its community. The architecture of Chùa Tự Quang is a testament to the rich traditions of Southern Vietnamese Buddhist temple design. Its triangular shape, three-compartment layout, and tiled roof are distinctive features. The temple’s original brick and mortar structure, along with its system of columns and beams, has been remarkably preserved. These elements provide valuable insights into the architectural history of the region. Chùa Tự Quang houses numerous historical artifacts. These include items inscribed with dates like Bình Tuất, Canh Dần, Giáp Ngọ, Tân Hợi, Canh Tý, and Mậu Thìn. Statues, altars, bells, couplets, plaques, and other ceremonial objects offer glimpses into the temple’s past. Many couplets and plaques contain Buddhist teachings, providing moral guidance to followers. Interestingly, many of these artifacts lack inscriptions and have simpler decorations. This stands in contrast to other temples in Ho Chi Minh City, showcasing a unique artistic approach. Chùa Tự Quang follows the Bắc Tông Buddhist tradition. Like many temples in the city, it hosts important annual ceremonies. These include Lễ Thượng nguyên, Lễ Trung nguyên, Lễ Hạ nguyên, and Lễ giỗ tổ. The temple maintains a daily schedule of Buddhist chanting and meditation practices, providing a peaceful rhythm to city life. Chùa Tự Quang’s history is intertwined with the development of the “Mười Tám Thôn Vườn Trầu” area, which later became Hóc Môn district. Studying Chùa Tự Quang provides valuable information about this region’s history and development. Among the temples in Hóc Môn district, Chùa Tự Quang stands out for its well-preserved traditional Southern Vietnamese architecture and historical artifacts. It serves as a testament to the cultural and religious heritage of the region. Recognizing its historical and cultural significance, Chùa Tự Quang was designated as a City-Level Architectural – Artistic Relic. Its proximity to other important sites in Hóc Môn district further enhances its value as a destination for spiritual tourism and historical exploration.
