Whispers of history echo around Chùa Thiên Giác, a place of peace nestled within Ho Chi Minh City. This Buddhist temple, though not as widely known as Giác Lâm Pagoda, holds its own unique charm and serenity. I must clarify that the information we have primarily focuses on Giác Lâm Pagoda, not Chùa Thiên Giác. While both are Buddhist temples in Ho Chi Minh City, they are distinct. Therefore, I’ll share the captivating story of Giác Lâm Pagoda, hoping it inspires you to explore Chùa Thiên Giác and uncover its hidden stories. Founded in 1744 by Lý Thụy Long, Giác Lâm Pagoda originally bore the names Sơn Căn and Cấm Sơn, reflecting its location on Cấm Sơn hillock. Later, it was nicknamed Cấm Đệm, a combination of Lý Thụy Long’s nickname, Cấm, and his profession, đệm (mattress making). In 1774, Zen Master Viên Quang assumed leadership, renaming it Giác Lâm and transforming it into a renowned training center for monks. Giác Lâm boasts a rich architectural history, showcasing a blend of Southern Vietnamese temple style and influences from various restorations. The major renovations, led by Viên Quang (1798-1804) and later by Nhu Lợi, Nhu Phong, and Hồng Hưng (1908-1909), shaped the pagoda’s current form. The main hall, with its 56 imposing columns adorned with gilded carvings, stands as a testament to the craftsmanship of the time. Venture into the garden, and you’ll find a stone statue of Bodhisattva Quan Thế Âm, sheltered by the shade of a large Bodhi tree gifted by Mr. Narada in 1953. The seven-story stupa, a more recent addition completed in 1994, houses numerous Buddha statues and offers a panoramic view of the surrounding area. Giác Lâm Pagoda is also home to a remarkable collection of 119 Buddha statues, crafted from diverse materials like wood, copper, cement, and gypsum. Among them, the wooden statue of Thích Ca stands out as the oldest, a silent witness to centuries of devotion. The pagoda’s walls, adorned with over 7,000 decorative porcelain plates, create a stunning visual spectacle, earning it a place in the Vietnam Record Book. Giác Lâm Pagoda is more than just a historical landmark; it’s a living testament to Buddhist tradition and a haven of tranquility amidst the bustling city. Although our journey today focused on Giác Lâm, I encourage you to explore Chùa Thiên Giác, drawing inspiration from Giác Lâm’s resilience and seeking out the unique stories it holds within its walls.
