Amidst the bustling energy of Hanoi, Chùa Thanh Liệt stands as a quiet testament to history and faith. Chùa Thanh Liệt is located in the Thanh Tri district. It’s a place where the past intertwines with the present. Chùa Thanh Liệt’s story begins long ago. The village of Thanh Liệt itself has a rich history, evolving from a small agricultural community to a vibrant part of Hanoi. The name “Thanh Liệt” reflects this transformation, adopted in 1844. Chùa Thanh Liệt has witnessed the flow of time and the changes that have shaped this community. The To Lich River, a vital waterway, flows alongside Thanh Liệt. The Quang Binh bridge connects the village to its neighbor, Bằng Liệt. This bridge, dating back to at least 1734, has its own story to tell. A stone inscription recounts how it was repaired with funds contributed by a Buddhist nun and her brother. Chùa Thanh Liệt is more than just a temple. It is a repository of local legends and lore. One of the most prominent figures associated with Thanh Liệt is Phạm Tu (476-545). He was a renowned military strategist who played a crucial role in defending the country. Phạm Tu’s legacy is honored in Đinh Ngoại, a shrine located within the village. Another significant figure is Chu Văn An (1292-1370), a respected scholar and educator. He is revered as the patron saint of Vietnamese Confucian education. A temple dedicated to him, Đinh Trong, once stood near the To Lich River. Sadly, it was demolished during road construction. Chùa Thanh Liệt continues to be a focal point for the community. The annual village festival, held from the 8th to the 10th day of the second lunar month, is a vibrant celebration of local culture. It features traditional performances, including tuong, cheo, and folk singing. The festival is a time for the community to come together, honoring their shared history and traditions.
