Whispers from the past echo here. We stand before Chùa Sùng Đức a temple over two centuries old. Founded in 1806 Chùa Sùng Đức has witnessed countless seasons.

Chùa Sùng Đức began with the devout family of ông bà Kiển. They built a simple Tam bảo establishing the temple’s foundation. A sư was invited to preside there. This marked the humble start of Chùa Sùng Đức.

Over time Chùa Sùng Đức faced the challenges of age and deterioration. In 1967 Hòa Thượng Thích Tuệ Hải undertook significant renovations. The main điện was rebuilt becoming more solemn. This transformation better served the Buddhist community.

Expansion continued in 1990 with the addition of a cổng tam quan. A giảng đường a thiền đường and a garden of stupas honoring past teachers were added. These additions supported the temple’s activities and spiritual practice.

During times of conflict Chùa Sùng Đức served as a revolutionary base. Cadres and soldiers found refuge and support here. Notable figures such as Hòa thượng Pháp Linh and Thiếu tướng Đào Sơn Tây contributed to the nation’s struggle.

In 2009 Chùa Sùng Đức was officially recognized. The UBND TP Hồ Chí Minh declared it a city-level architectural art monument. This acknowledged the temple’s enduring cultural and historical value.

Today Ni sư Thích Nữ Mỹ Thuận the 15th abbess continues the legacy. She preserves and promotes the spiritual values of Chùa Sùng Đức.

Chùa Sùng Đức preserves many valuable antiques. These items showcase the remarkable carving skills of artisans past. Among these treasures is a bronze đại hồng chung. It stands 1.3 meters tall with a base diameter of 67 cm. A wooden statue of Đức Phật Thích Ca also stands 1.3 meters tall. A cổ trống is 1.34 meters long with a diameter of 75 cm.

Additionally the temple possesses eight ancient statues. Eight horizontal lacquered boards display calligraphy. Three pairs of valuable wooden liên đối are also present. Many of these items are gilded intricately carved reflecting the dedication of the artists.

Chùa Sùng Đức maintains its ancient architectural style despite renovations. The design features a nhà tứ trụ style. It also includes a mái ngói âm dương a traditional East Asian design. The temple follows the tam 三 layout.

The cổng Tam quan features softly curving tiled roofs. The name Sùng Đức Tự is inscribed in Chinese characters. Parallel sentences in Chinese calligraphy adorn the cổng’s columns adding to its solemnity.

Passing through the cổng Tam quan reveals the temple grounds. Statues of Phật Quán Thế Âm Bồ Tát and Phật Di Lặc enhance the serene atmosphere.

The tiền đường features two curved roofs covered with fish-scale tiles. This creates a unique and harmonious aesthetic. The chánh điện of Chùa Sùng Đức is solemnly decorated. Many statues of wood bronze and plaster are intricately carved.

The central altar has two levels. Đức Phật Thích Ca is enshrined on the upper level. Văn Thù Bồ Tát and Phổ Hiền Bồ Tát stand on either side. The lower level features statues of Quán Thế Âm Bồ Tát and Đức Địa Tạng Bồ Tát. The chánh điện also includes an altar to Thập Điện Diêm Vương and other deities.

Behind the chánh điện lies the Tổ đường. Here the ancestral teachers are venerated. A statue of Phật A Di Đà is placed here. Precious bộ trường kỷ horizontal lacquered boards and couplets are displayed alongside the architectural art monument certificate.

Chùa Sùng Đức has a history spanning over 200 years. Founded in 1806 it stands as a testament to time. Its enduring architecture and spiritual significance make it a cultural treasure.
