Chùa Phật Hộc Xá Lợi, also known as Xá Lợi Pagoda, sits at the corner of Bà Huyện Thanh Quan and Sư Thiện Chiếu streets in District 3. Despite the turmoil, construction began on this grand temple. The vision of architects Trấn Văn Đường and Đỗ Bá Vinh, Chùa Phật Hộc Xá Lợi was completed in 1958, becoming a symbol of hope and resilience. The name “Xá Lợi” itself speaks volumes about the pagoda’s purpose. It refers to the relics of Buddhist masters, signifying a place dedicated to preserving and transmitting Buddhist teachings. But more than just a repository of relics, Chùa Phật Hộc Xá Lợi is a living, breathing testament to Buddhist art and architecture. The main hall, bathed in natural light, is adorned with fifteen magnificent paintings. These murals, created by Professor Nguyễn Văn Long of the Gia Định Fine Arts School, depict scenes from the life of Gautama Buddha. Notice the intricate details and vibrant colors of each level, a testament to the skilled craftsmanship of the artists. High atop the stupa hangs a majestic bronze bell. Weighing in at two tons, it was modeled after the famous bell from the Thiên Mụ Pagoda in Huế. Listen closely.
