Whispers of ancient deities echo within Chùa Ngoc Hồ. This isn’t just any temple. This is Ngoc Hồ Temple a place steeped in history and legend. Right here in Hanoi’s bustling Dong Da district it stands at 128 Nguyen Khuyen Street.
For centuries Chùa Ngoc Hồ has been a beacon of spirituality. It was built on land once belonging to Thang Long. Some say it dates back to 1128 under King Lý Thần Tông. Others believe it was significantly rebuilt during the reign of King Lê Thánh Tông (1460-1497). Legend has it that Lê Thánh Tông himself encountered a celestial being here. This is recounted in the story “Bích Câu Kỳ Ngộ” by Đoàn Thị Điểm. The main character Trần Tú Uyên also encounters a deity within these very walls.
Chùa Ngoc Hồ has endured much. It’s seen numerous restorations across different dynasties. The temple’s architecture speaks volumes. You see the Tam quan (three-gate entrance) the main sanctuary and the courtyards. Inside you’ll find the Three Jewels a symbol of Buddhist faith. There’s a Hall of the Buddhas and a Hall of Ancestors.
The temple is a treasure trove of artifacts. Thirty-five Buddha statues adorn the main hall each a unique piece of art. There are also many valuable wooden tablets. Sixteen stelae stand as silent witnesses to time. One stele is particularly important. It is the “Ngoc Hồ tự thành tích bị ký” which narrates the achievements of King Lê Thánh Tông. The temple also holds other treasures like ancient bells and ornate doors. Many of these objects reflect the artistic styles of the 19th and 20th centuries. They narrate the history of the temple’s restoration and the social life of the time. The temple’s beauty isn’t just in its grandeur. It is also in the intricate details.
More than just bricks and mortar Chùa Ngoc Hồ is a living testament to the enduring spirit of Vietnamese Buddhism. It’s a place where history whispers and legends come alive. It’s a place where the divine and the human intertwine. In 1993 Chùa Ngoc Hồ received national recognition as a historical and cultural relic. So stand here and absorb its quiet majesty. Feel the weight of history. Feel the peace of this sacred space. Remember this story. Remember Chùa Ngoc Hồ.
