Quan Yin’s compassionate gaze. That’s what many feel when they enter Chùa Nghĩa An. But this temple, also known as Miếu Quan Đế and Chùa Ông, is primarily dedicated to Quan Công, the deified Chinese military leader. Chùa Nghĩa An stands as a testament to the Chaozhou Chinese community who built it in the late 1800s in District 5, Ho Chi Minh City. It’s not just a place of worship. It’s a living museum of Chinese culture and artistry.

Chùa Nghĩa An’s architecture immediately reveals its Chinese heritage. The main temple is a three-tiered structure. The middle section stands tall, flanked by two lower wings. Atop the roof, twin dragons entwine, vying for a pearl. This motif, the “Lưỡng long tranh châu,” symbolizes prosperity and power. The temple grounds are expansive, covering nearly half of the 2,000 square meter complex. Five grand staircases, each flanked by matching stone lions, lead to the main entrance. A unique “sunken dragon” staircase flanks the central path, adding to the temple’s mystique. Above the main entrance, a 1903 sign proclaims “Nghĩa An Hội Quán,” with the inscription “Lục Quốc phong tường.”

Stepping inside, one is greeted by an array of deities. The main hall houses the imposing three-meter-tall statue of Quan Công. He sits upon his throne, clad in a green dragon robe. His face, as red as cinnabar, reflects his legendary temper. His long beard flows down to his chest, a symbol of wisdom. Flanking Quan Công are his faithful companions, Quan Binh and Châu Xương, each standing nearly two meters tall.

Beyond Quan Công, within the temple’s left and right wings, reside other important figures. Thiên Hậu Thánh Mẫu, the goddess of the sea and protector of sailors, offers solace and hope. Tải Bạch tinh quân, the God of Wealth, bestows blessings of prosperity. These deities, along with nearly fifty ornate plaques bearing Chinese characters and intricate carvings, create a rich tapestry of Chinese mythology and folklore.

Chùa Nghĩa An is more than just a static monument. It’s a vibrant hub of cultural activity. The temple’s main festival takes place on the 13th day of the first lunar month. Devotees come to seek Quan Công’s blessings for the new year. One popular ritual involves crawling under the statue of Quan Công’s red horse while ringing a bell around its neck, hoping to attract good fortune. Another important celebration falls on the 24th day of the sixth lunar month, Quan Công’s birthday. On this day, children receive sweet treats, and adults can even request loans from the temple. These lively festivals ensure Chùa Nghĩa An remains a vital part of Ho Chi Minh City’s cultural landscape. It is a place where history, art, and spirituality converge, offering a glimpse into the rich traditions of the Chaozhou Chinese community.
