Intrigued by a hidden sanctuary? We stand before Chùa Nam Đồng. This ancient temple whispers tales of Hanoi’s past.

Chùa Nam Đồng stands modestly at 32/64 Nguyễn Lương Bằng Street. It is in the heart of the bustling Đống Đa district. Legend says its story began in 1141. It was during the reign of King Lý Anh Tông. The temple’s original name was Càn An Tự. This means “Temple of Tranquil Peace.”

Over the centuries Chùa Nam Đồng faced trials. It was devastated by war during the Nam-Bắc dynasties. Restoration became its mantra.

The stele “Sáng tạo Càn An Tự bi ký” tells a story. In 1612 Nguyễn Nhân, a high-ranking monk initiated a rebuild. Then in 1697 under King Lê Hy Tông another renovation occurred. The main hall Tiền đường, Tam quan and the bell tower were rebuilt. Chùa Nam Đồng then became a center of Buddhism. It was very important to Thăng Long. That was the former name of Hanoi at that time.

Look closely at the architecture before you. Notice the three-entrance gate. The central entrance has two stories. It features a faux roof made of plaster. The Tiền Đường has seven compartments. Its unique design includes hồi bít đốc walls. Also notable are the giá chiêng beams. The exterior showcases a wide roof. It rests on curved brackets. These brackets interlock with the supporting columns.

Inside the Phật điện, the Tam Thế statues capture attention. The sculptures have raised details. Their faces are serene. The lotus pedestals display intricate carvings. Notice the lotus and chrysanthemum patterns. See the stylized mythical creatures. These include dragons and horses riding waves. The Quan Âm and Đại Thế Chí statues stand tall. They wear elaborate crowns. Their calm expressions emanate peace.

Chùa Nam Đồng preserves precious relics. Admire the stone steles. See the bronze bells. Notice the intricate doors. Marvel at the gilded palanquin. Its craftsmanship reflects 18th-century artistry.

Festivals at Chùa Nam Đồng include the 5th day of the first lunar month. Other dates are the 7th of March and the 17th of February. The main festival occurs on February 17th. The festival includes a procession. Sometimes it goes to Chiêu Thiền Temple. There are offerings, traditional singing and martial arts.

In 1992 the Ministry of Culture recognized Chùa Nam Đồng. It became a national architectural treasure.

Chùa Nam Đồng stands as a testament to resilience. It is a beacon of Hanoi’s cultural soul. It has been a sanctuary of peace and artistry for centuries.
