Hidden amongst Hanoi’s bustling streets lies Chùa làng Cam a testament to Vietnam’s rich history. This isn’t just any temple. Chùa làng Cam holds a special place in the hearts of the people of Cổ Bi.

Chùa làng Cam sits in the heart of Cổ Bi village Gia Lâm district Hanoi. Cổ Bi a village with a long history boasts three hamlets Cam Vàng and Hội. Before 1945 Cổ Bi was part of Đông Đá Gia Lâm district Bắc Ninh province. Later it became Trung Thành village still in Gia Lâm but now part of Hanoi. In 1965 Trung Thành was renamed Cổ Bi.

Cổ Bi’s land is rich with history. Legend says it once had 99 ancient wells. The area’s fertile soil and strategic location played a significant role in its development. Lord Trịnh Cương (1709-1729) is said to have ordered a temple built here. Later Lord Trịnh Doanh (1740-1767) planned to move the royal court from Thăng Long to Cổ Bi. This ambitious plan however never materialized.

Cổ Bi’s strategic importance was felt during the fight against French colonialism. The village became known for its two fierce uprisings against the invaders. Its people bravely contributed to the overall victory of the Vietnamese people.

Chùa làng Cam proudly stands as a symbol of resistance. It houses two guardian statues embodying Á Lã Nàng Đê and Chú Cuông. These figures represent the strength and resilience of the Vietnamese people against foreign aggression. They symbolize the unwavering protection of national sovereignty and the heroic spirit of the people. The temple also honors Thái Tổ Chiêu Dương a queen who worked tirelessly for the land. Her devotion earned her deification as a revered goddess. She is a shining example for the Vietnamese people of strength and leadership.

The temple complex underwent significant restoration in 2004. The renovation was a collaborative effort reflecting the community’s dedication to preserving its cultural heritage. Today Chùa làng Cam stands majestically. Its architecture is a harmonious blend of traditional styles.

The temple’s main structure consists of three gates the main hall and two side halls. Intricate carvings and vibrant colors adorn the temple. These are testaments to the artistry and devotion that went into its creation. The temple also houses numerous valuable artifacts including steles from 1783 and 1800. These artifacts offer insights into the temple’s history and the cultural landscape of its time.

Chùa làng Cam is more than a place of worship. It’s a living museum a repository of history and a symbol of national pride. It is a place where the past present and future converge. This is Chùa làng Cam a story etched in stone and whispered on the wind.
