A serene stillness permeates Chùa Giác Lâm. But do you know the secrets this ancient temple holds? Chùa Giác Lâm, also known as Giác Lâm Temple, whispers stories from 1744. It’s one of Ho Chi Minh City’s oldest temples. Imagine a time when this bustling city was a dense jungle, filled with foliage and fragrant flower gardens. Back then, Chùa Giác Lâm served as a tranquil gathering place during Tết. It offered a scenic lookout over the bustling Gia Định markets. The temple was built by Lý Thụy Long, a native of Minh Hương. Its creation coincided with the Vietnamese new year during the reign of Nguyễn Phúc Khoát. This was a significant period in Southern Vietnam’s history. In 1772, Thích Viên Quang, a revered figure of the Lâm Tế Thiền lineage, became the abbot. This marked a turning point, giving the temple its current name. Chùa Giác Lâm has undergone several renovations. The first major reconstruction occurred between 1799 and 1804, overseen by Thích Viên Quang himself. Years later, from 1906 to 1909, Thích Hồng Hưng, with the help of Thích Như Phong, led another complete renovation. The details of these transformations are meticulously documented and displayed within the main hall. Inside Chùa Giác Lâm, you’ll find 112 historic statues. These wooden figures are adorned with gold coatings. Among them, a statue of Gautama Buddha on a lotus seat stands out. Dating back to the 18th century, this wooden masterpiece resides in the dharma hall. In the main hall, the Nine Dragons altar, crafted from bronze, depicts the birth of Prince Siddhartha. Two sets of eighteen arahant statues flank the Buddha statue, each set representing a different era of the temple’s history. Chùa Giác Lâm isn’t just a temple; it’s a living testament to Vietnam’s rich spiritual heritage. As you explore its serene grounds, remember the stories it whispers, the history it holds, and the peace it offers within the heart of a vibrant city.
