Beneath the emerald green glazed roof tiles lies a story. It is the story of Chùa Huê Nghiêm. It is a place where centuries of history and spirituality converge.

Welcome to Chùa Huê Nghiêm. This ancient pagoda stands tall on its large campus. It attracts visitors with its beautiful roof. It is located on Dang Van Bi Street in Thu Duc City.

Chùa Huê Nghiêm is among the oldest pagodas in Ho Chi Minh City. Documents show it was built in 1721 by Zen Master Thiet Thoai. He was also known as Tanh Tuong. During his travels the Zen Master was charmed by the local landscape. He decided to settle here to spread Buddhism. He started with a simple grass cottage.

After Zen Master Thiet Thoai passed away Zen Master Te Ly succeeded him. He was also known as Quang Duc. He noted the temple was on low land near a Saigon River section. Zen Master Te Ly decided to relocate the pagoda.

Nguyen Thi Hien offered a land plot. She was a rich woman in Linh Chieu Dong village. Today that is Thu Duc City. The pagoda was moved to its current location because of her generosity.

Over the last 300 years Chùa Huê Nghiêm has seen several renovations. It has maintained the traditional architectural beauty of Southern Vietnamese pagodas. Look closely at the yin-yang roof tiles with their curved ridges. The roof is adorned with lotus flower patterns. See the stylized wheels of reincarnation. The decorative motifs are gilded on a vibrant red background.

The pagoda has a spacious courtyard. It has large greenery. Miniatures are harmoniously arranged. You will find the Buddha Shakyamuni meditating under the Bodhi tree. Spot Prince Siddhartha renouncing his royal life to become a monk. There is also an Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva worship tower.

Hidden among the ornamental flowers is a stupa garden. It contains old stupas of the Zen masters and monks who established the pagoda.

Chùa Huê Nghiêm is associated with the magic legend of Lady Hien. Lady Hien refers to Nguyen Thi Hien. She was the woman who donated land for the pagoda. She was renowned for her wealth. She frequently helped the poor. She supported community projects. She was a devout Buddhist. Her Buddhism name was Lieu Dao.

Monks at Chùa Huê Nghiêm tell a story. It is said that after death she was reincarnated as a Qing Dynasty princess in China. A document recounts during Emperor Daoguang’s reign a consort gave birth to a princess. The princess clenched her fists tightly upon birth. After monks chanted the princess opened her fists. Red letters appeared in her palms. They read Lieu Dao Hue Nghiem Gia Dinh.

Today’s appearance of Chùa Huê Nghiêm has changed. However the historical mark on the old land is still bold. The architecture and temple scene have undergone many restoration phases. Zen master Dat Ly organized the biggest ant coincidence at the end of the nineteenth century. He was also known as Hue Luu.

The main hall of the pagoda has an altar. It is there to worship the ancestors Thiet Thuy. He was also known as Tanh Tuong. He built the pagoda since the early days. He lived from 1681 to 1757.

Chùa Huê Nghiêm stands as a testament to time. It embodies the enduring spirit of Buddhism. Its rich history and architectural details offer a glimpse into Vietnam’s past. Take a moment to appreciate the beauty. Reflect on the stories held within these walls. Let the tranquility of this sacred space fill you.
