Can you imagine a temple standing for centuries? Chùa Hội Khánh is such a place. It is a historic Buddhist temple. Chùa Hội Khánh was built in 1741. The temple is located in Thủ Dầu Một. It is in Bình Dương Province in southern Vietnam.

The temple was first built on a hill. In 1861, fighting destroyed it during the French colonization. Thích Chánh Đắc rebuilt it. The new location was at the foot of the hill. It was about 100 meters south of the original site. Today, you can find it at 35 Yersin Street. It is in Phú Cường ward. The temple is north of Bình Dương.

Just 150 meters from the road, you will find Chùa Hội Khánh. Triple gates with dragons and phoenixes mark the entrance. Inside, it is a quiet area. Many trees grow here. Four eucalyptus trees are over a century old. They were planted soon after the temple was rebuilt.

Chùa Hội Khánh has been renovated and expanded. Yet, it still has its old-fashioned architecture. The preaching hall and eastern sanctuary were rebuilt in 1917. The western sanctuary was rebuilt in 1984. The main ceremonial hall was rebuilt in 1990 and 1991.

In 1992, the Buddhist Association of Song Be Province restored the temple’s historical statues. The main hall and sanctuaries cover 700 square meters. Inside the main hall, you will see Gautama Buddha. Statues of Ksitigarbha and other bodhisattvas are also present. All are made of wood and painted gold. Eighteen arahants surround the main hall. Local craftsmen carved these wooden statues in the late 19th century.

Over 250 years, ten abbots have led Chùa Hội Khánh. The cremated remains of nine past abbots are in stupas on the grounds. The current abbot is Thích Huệ Thông. He is also Secretary-General of the provincial Buddhist association.

Chùa Hội Khánh has been a center for Buddhist learning. Many monks trained here have opened other temples nearby. One notable monk was Thích Từ Văn. He was a leading monk in southern Vietnam. In 1920, he spoke on dharma in Marseilles, France. He helped set up Hội Khánh Temple in Marseille.

From 1923 to 1926, anti-colonial activists met here. They wanted Vietnamese independence from France. One activist was Nguyễn Sinh Sắc. He was the father of Ho Chi Minh.

The Vietnamese government recognizes Chùa Hội Khánh. It is listed as having heritage value. This is because of its significance in national culture. Visiting Chùa Hội Khánh offers a glimpse into Vietnam’s past. It shows the enduring strength of its Buddhist traditions.
