Hidden amongst Hanoi’s bustling streets lies Chùa Hà a temple steeped in history and tradition. Chùa Hà also known as Thành Đức Tự is more than just a place of worship. It’s a significant cultural landmark. It forms a complex with Đình Bối Hà a communal house. This complex sits on land that once belonged to the Hả hamlet. This hamlet was located across from the Cầu Giấy street in the village of Trung. Today the address is 86 Chùa Hà Dịch Vọng Cầu Giấy Hanoi.

Chùa Hà is renowned alongside the Duyên Ninh Temple. It is one of two temples in northern Vietnam famous for prayers seeking a happy partnership. Many come seeking blessings for love. Young couples pray for a successful marriage. Single people hope to find their soulmate.

Throughout the year Chùa Hà hosts several festivals. The 11th day of the first lunar month celebrates the birthday of the tutelary god Triệu Chi Thành. His death is commemorated on the 12th day of the eighth lunar month. The Đám festival takes place on the 12th day of the second lunar month. People pray for good fortune good weather and good health. Traditional activities like human chess swinging and tug-of-war are part of the festivities. Temple songs and lion dances fill the air.

The temple is particularly busy on the first and fifteenth days of the lunar month. These are the sóc vọng days or syzygies. Devotees light incense sticks and pray to Buddha and the saints. The temple often fills with a thick haze of incense smoke. People hope for protection from misfortune and the fulfillment of their wishes for happiness and prosperity.
