“Can you hear the whispers of time echoing through the ancient walls?” asks the air as we gather before Chùa Giác Tâm. This Buddhist temple stands as a testament to Ho Chi Minh City’s rich history. It is a place where spirituality intertwines with architectural grandeur.

Chùa Giác Tâm is a historic Buddhist temple in Ho Chi Minh City. Built in 1744, it ranks as one of the city’s oldest temples. The Vietnamese Department of Culture officially recognized its historical significance on November 16, 1988.

Originally known as Cẩm Sơn Pagoda, its story began with Lý Thụy Long. He was a Chinese expatriate who chose this spot on Cẩm Sơn hill. Over time, the temple transformed becoming a serene lookout. It once overlooked the bustling Gia Định markets.

In 1772, Thích Viên Quang arrived and the temple’s name changed to Giác Lâm. This marked a new chapter. The temple became a center for Buddhist learning.

Throughout its history, Chùa Giác Tâm has seen multiple renovations. The first major reconstruction occurred between 1799 and 1804. Later, from 1906 to 1909, another total renovation took place preserving its legacy for generations.

As you step through the main gate, a serene garden welcomes you. A towering Bodhi tree dominates the landscape. It symbolizes enlightenment. This special tree arrived from Sri Lanka in 1953. It was a gift from the monk Narada. Accompanying the tree were relics of Gautama Buddha.

To the left, stands a seven-story stupa. Its construction began in 1970 but faced interruptions. It finally completed in 1993. Today, it serves as a prominent landmark. It houses sacred relics of the Buddha.

Inside the main building of Chùa Giác Tâm, you will find a rectangular structure. It consists of three main rooms. These are the main ceremonial hall, the dharma preaching hall, and the meal hall. Ninety-eight pillars support the temple. Each pillar has carved inscriptions.

The main altar features a statue of Amitabha Buddha. Before it, you will see Sakyamuni Buddha and four bodhisattvas. These are Samantabhadra, Manjusri, Avalokiteshvara, and Mahasthamaprapta. Together they create a typical Mahayanist grouping.

Chùa Giác Tâm boasts 112 historic statues made of wood with gold coatings. Seven bronze statues also grace the temple. The oldest statue is an 18th-century Gautama Buddha. It resides in the dharma hall.

On the temple’s left side, you’ll find stupas dedicated to past abbots. These stupas honor Thích Viên Quang, Thích Hải Tịnh, and others.

Today, Chùa Giác Tâm stands as a cultural and historical treasure. It welcomes visitors. Its architecture and artifacts tell stories of faith. The pagoda contributes to Ho Chi Minh City’s unique cultural tapestry.
