A spiritual haven. That’s what Chùa Giác Phước is for many. This temple stands as a testament to faith and community in Ho Chi Minh City.
Chùa Giác Phước is located at 1096 Quoc lo 1A in Binh Tan District. It is a place where people find solace. It’s a place to learn and to support each other.
Let’s step back in time to understand its origins. Chùa Giác Phước was founded in 1974. Two revered figures were behind its establishment. They were Hòa Thượng Thích Chơn Mỹ and Hòa Thượng Thích Thiện Nghĩa. These monks from District 6 joined forces to support the vision of Hòa Thượng Thích Huệ Thông.
The land itself has a history dating back to 1937. It belonged to cố Hòa Thượng Thích Từ Phong. This provides a sense of continuity and deep roots for the temple.
The temple is more than just a religious site. The monks say that Chùa Giác Phước is a spiritual anchor. It watches over 4000 graves in the Giác Phước cemetery. This cemetery existed before the temple was built.
When Chùa Giác Phước was completed in 1975, Hòa Thượng Thích Huệ Thông became the Abbot. For over 35 years, he dedicated himself to the temple. He renovated and upgraded it. He provided a space for Buddhists to practice and learn.
Challenges arose in 2010. City development led to the widening of National Highway 1A. The temple found itself on land that was being reclaimed. The preaching hall, the shrine for offering sacrifices, and the entire cemetery were submerged. Water levels reached 90cm. Even the main hall was flooded.
In 2011, Hòa Thượng Trụ Trì appealed for help. He called on monks and Buddhists to help rebuild the temple. Progress was slow due to a lack of funds. Construction temporarily stopped. Finally, in 2017, restoration work continued. By the end of 2019, major projects were completed. These included the main hall, ancestral hall, guest house, and monks’ quarters.
In January 2024, Chùa Giác Phước held a ceremony. They celebrated the completion of renovations. Dignitaries from other temples attended. They prayed for the success of future construction.
Today, Chùa Giác Phước stands as a symbol of resilience. It reflects the community’s dedication to preserving their spiritual center. The temple continues to evolve. It offers a place for worship, study, and spiritual support. It is led by Hòa Thượng Thích Huệ Thông. He also serves as the Vice Chairman of the Binh Tan District Buddhist Sangha.
