Ever heard of a temple born from a home? That’s the tale of Chùa Duệ Tú. We stand before a place of serenity. It is a sanctuary amidst Hanoi’s vibrant streets.

Chùa Duệ Tú isn’t just another temple. It is a testament to devotion. It embodies a unique story that stretches back centuries. Imagine, if you will, the 11th century. King Lý Nhân Tông ruled Vietnam.

During this time a man named Lê Nghĩa lived. He was later known as Thiền sư Đại Điên. This monk left an indelible mark. His story is woven into the very fabric of this place.

Lê Nghĩa’s parents passed away. He made a profound decision. He donated his family land to create a temple. This act of selflessness gave birth to Quảng Khai Tự. It became a place for spiritual practice. Over time it was called Chùa Duệ Tú.

Legend says that Thiền sư Đại Điên studied magic. He did this with Từ Vinh. This man was from Láng village. A dispute arose. Từ Vinh used magic against Diên Thành Hầu. The powerful figure retaliated. He ordered Đại Điên to kill Từ Vinh. Đại Điên obeyed then threw the body into the Tô Lịch River.

Later Từ Đạo Hạnh sought revenge. He was Từ Vinh’s son. He had mastered magic himself. He killed Đại Điên avenging his father.

The temple’s entrance is on Nguyễn Khánh Toàn street. You must pass through Chùa Duệ Tú alley. Notice the garden nearby. There is a statue of Quan Âm Nam Hải on an octagonal floor. It faces West. It looks towards the Buddhist land in Tây Trúc.

Over the years Chùa Duệ Tú has been renovated. It has been restored several times. These happened in 1936, 1985 and 1994. Its current architecture reflects the Nguyễn dynasty.

The Tam Quan is built in the ngũ môn style. This features five gates. Inside you will see tables and chairs. These are for receiving guests. The walls display steles. A bronze bell hangs above. It was cast in the Gia Long era.

The exterior of the Tam Quan is adorned with parallel sentences. These are in Chinese characters and Quốc ngữ. Passing through the “Chính tâm” gate reveals a brick courtyard. To the right you will see a five-room Tổ hall. Opposite is the spacious Mẫu hall.

The Tam Bảo hall faces southeast. It was rebuilt with two stories. It has four roofs. Stained glass windows let in natural light. The front hall has five rooms. The steps are high. They reach seven levels. Inside the pillars are carved with dragons.

The Hậu cung is built in the “tường hồi bít đốc” style. It connects to the tiền đường forming a chain shape. High ceilings and ornate columns create a grand space. These are lacquered in gold.

Inside the Mẫu hall are statues of Đức thánh Trần Hưng Đạo. There are also statues of Thanh Long and Sơn Trang. These sculptures display harmonious artistry.

Chùa Duệ Tú houses a complete system of Buddhist statues. Some sculptures date back to the 18th and 19th centuries. A life-sized statue of sư Đại Điên sits in a khám thờ. Nearby a stone stele records the phong titles conferred upon Đại Điên.

Every year locals celebrate the Chùa Duệ Tú festival. This coincides with the Láng Pagoda festival. They both occur on the seventh day of the third lunar month.

In 1989 the Ministry of Culture and Information recognized Chùa Duệ Tú. It was classified as a National Architectural Art Relic.

Chùa Duệ Tú stands as a beacon of cultural and spiritual heritage. It offers a glimpse into Hanoi’s rich history. It reminds us of the enduring power of faith. It shows the legacy of those who came before.
