“Have you ever heard whispers of a place where the mountains meet the sea, where spirituality intertwines with breathtaking beauty?” I asked, gesturing towards the magnificent Chúa Đống Thiện. Chúa Đống Thiện is a sanctuary nestled on the slopes of Bai But Mountain, overlooking the vast East Sea. Its back rests against the lush Son Tra Peninsula, a haven of primeval forests. This is not merely a temple of exquisite architecture, but a confluence of earth, heaven, and human hearts. Chúa Đống Thiện’s story begins in 2004, when construction started on this sprawling 20-hectare site. Six years later, in 2010, the temple was inaugurated, a testament to the vision of Venerable Thich Thien Nguyen and the collective efforts of Buddhists far and wide. Chúa Đống Thiện stands as a symbol of 21st-century Vietnamese Mahayana Buddhism. It’s a place where Buddhist activities flourish, drawing pilgrims and tourists alike. The temple’s location, Bai But, carries a legend of its own. During the 19th century, under the reign of King Minh Mang, a Buddha image mysteriously drifted ashore onto this sandy beach. The locals saw this as an auspicious sign, a divine blessing. They established a place of worship, and from then on, the sea remained calm, and the fishing village prospered. The name “Bai But,” meaning “Buddha amidst an earthly place,” commemorates this miraculous event. Now, the magnificent Chúa Đống Thiện graces this sacred ground. The temple’s architecture is a captivating blend of traditional Vietnamese Buddhist design and modern aesthetics. The main hall boasts a dragon-shaped dome, with pillars adorned by winding dragons. Within, a statue of Buddha Shakyamuni takes center stage, flanked by Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva and Ksitigarbha Bodhisattva. These bronze statues are meticulously crafted, their details radiating serenity and wisdom. The temple grounds are also home to a remarkable sight, the tallest statue of Avalokitesvara Buddha in Vietnam. This 67-meter-high statue stands on a giant lotus platform, its gentle gaze overlooking Da Nang Bay and the Marble Mountains. The statue’s right hand is raised in a gesture of samadhi. Its left hand holds a nectar vase, symbolizing the bestowing of peace and luck upon sentient beings. The 17 floors within the statue house altars with 21 Buddha statues, each unique in shape, face, and posture. Chúa Đống Thiện isn’t just a feast for the eyes; it’s a place of spiritual solace. Pilgrims come to offer prayers, make wishes, and seek blessings from the Lady Buddha. It’s a place where you can witness daily rituals and ceremonies, immersing yourself in the rich tapestry of Vietnamese Buddhist culture. The temple’s serene gardens, shaded by lush trees, offer a respite from the world’s clamor, inviting contemplation and inner peace. From the vantage point of the Lady Buddha statue, the panoramic view of Da Nang city unfolds, a breathtaking vista of sea, island, mountains, and forests. As the sun sets, the sky paints a vibrant backdrop, casting a magical glow on this sacred sanctuary. Chúa Đống Thiện beckons, a place where the whispers of history and the tranquility of nature converge, leaving an indelible mark on every soul.
