Time seems to stand still within the serene grounds of Chùa Đình Lắm. This isn’t just any temple. It’s a living testament to faith resilience and history woven into the very fabric of Ho Chi Minh City.

Chùa Đình Lắm or Giác Lảm Temple as it’s also known holds a special place in the city’s heart. It’s one of the oldest Buddhist temples. Its roots stretch back to 1744. Imagine the bustling markets of Gia Định then a fledgling settlement. This temple stood as a tranquil hilltop sanctuary. A beautiful lookout overlooking the vibrant life below.

Lý Thuy Long a native of Minh Hương built this temple. He did so during the Vietnamese New Year in the reign of Nguyễn Phúc Khoát. Records describe the area as a jungle with lush foliage and flower gardens. The temple served as a gathering place during Tet. It remains a beloved community hub today.

In 1772 Thích Viên Quang became the temple’s abbot. The temple then took its current name Giác Lảm. It has survived numerous renovations. The first major renovation occurred between 1799 and 1804. Another took place from 1906 to 1909. The history of these renovations is displayed within the temple’s main hall.

Look closely. You’ll see a magnificent Bodhi tree. It arrived in 1953 from Sri Lanka. The famous monk Narada brought it along with Buddha’s relics. The tree stands as a symbol of enlightenment. It’s a reminder of the temple’s enduring spiritual significance.

The seven-story hexagonal stupa is a sight to behold. It houses Buddha’s relics. Construction began in 1970. The fall of Saigon temporarily halted work. It was finally completed in 1994. The stupa stands as a towering landmark. It’s a testament to the faith that persevered through turbulent times.

The main temple building is rectangular. It measures 65 meters in length and 22 meters in width. It houses three main halls: the ceremonial hall the dharma preaching hall and the meal hall. Ninety-eight pillars support the structure. Eighty-six phrases in gold paint adorn these pillars. Intricate carvings depict dragons guarding the entrance. Precious wood crafted altars stand within. The main altar showcases Amitabha Buddha. It also features Sakyamuni Buddha and four bodhisattvas.

The temple boasts 112 historic statues. Many are wood with gold coatings. Seven are bronze. The oldest statue dates back to the 18th century. It’s a wooden statue of Gautama Buddha. The Nine Dragons altar depicts Prince Siddhartha’s birth. Two sets of 18 arahant statues add to the temple’s rich collection.

A series of stupas honors the abbots who served Chùa Đình Lắm. One stupa is dedicated to Thích Viên Quang. Another honors Thích Phật Ði the master of Thích Viên Quang. The temple grounds stand as a sanctuary. It holds stories of faith perseverance and cultural heritage. It’s a must-see on any Ho Chi Minh City tour.
