Is Chua Dai Bi haunted by the whispers of ancient monks? Chua Dai Bi, nestled in the Hoi Duc district of Hanoi, holds centuries of stories within its weathered walls. This temple, also known as Chua Thuong or Chua Bai, rests just beyond the dyke at the beginning of Quoc Duong. The very name, Dai Bi, evokes a sense of grand compassion, a core tenet of Buddhist philosophy.

Chua Dai Bi isn’t just a place of worship. It’s a living testament to the enduring spirit of Vietnamese Buddhism. Imagine stepping through the grand two-story, eight-roofed gatehouse. The central bay houses the impressive Dai Bi bell, cast in 1798 and standing over a meter tall. To the left hangs a large bronze bell from 1818. These bells, with their inscriptions, have resonated with prayers and chants for generations.

The temple’s main hall, a seven-room structure, embodies a traditional “cross-building” style. Originally, the main hall served as both Thieu Huong, a place for ancestral worship, and Thuong Dien, the main worship hall. The structure is supported by five rows of pillars, creating a spacious area for ceremonies and rituals. Inside, you’ll find statues of the “Nine Ranks of Dharma,” the Goddess of Mercy, and other important figures. Some of these date back to the early 20th century, their painted details still vibrant.

Behind the main hall, the Hau Duong provides a quiet space for reflection. Here, you’ll find statues of Buddha, Tran Thanh, the Mother Goddess, and representations of the four corners of the earth. These figures, arranged according to Buddhist cosmology, depict the journey from suffering to enlightenment. Look closely, and you might discover intricate carvings of dragons, phoenixes, and lotus flowers, symbols deeply embedded in Vietnamese culture and spirituality.

A remarkable artifact resides within the Thieu Huong. A large, ornate stone stele, over two and a half meters long, stands as a testament to the artistry of the Tran dynasty. Its four corners are adorned with Garuda bird deities, and the surfaces are intricately carved with dragons, phoenixes, and other mystical creatures. This stele, dating back to 1374, offers a glimpse into the rich artistic traditions of Vietnam’s past. Chua Dai Bi is more than just bricks and mortar. It is a repository of history, art, and spiritual devotion, a place where the past resonates in the present.
