“Eighteenth-century origins echo in the very stones before us” can you hear them? This is Chùa Châu Lâm. Let me tell you its story.

Chùa Châu Lâm, also known as Châu Lâm tự, is a Buddhist temple with roots stretching back to the Lê Dynasty. That makes it from the 1700s. This sacred space is located at 199 Thụy Khuê Street. It offers a serene escape from Hanoi’s vibrant streets.

Imagine this area centuries ago. Craftsmen meticulously constructed this temple. They were using traditional techniques that were passed down through generations. The result was a large architectural marvel with many interconnected buildings. The temple has stood the test of time. It is now a cultural and spiritual anchor for the community.

As you approach Chùa Châu Lâm, notice the three-tiered Tam Quan gate. It functions as a bell tower. The main gate showcases an elaborate design. Two side gates have double-layered roofs. Look closely at the pillars flanking the side gates. They are topped with sculptures of four phoenixes. Their tails intertwine to form a trái dành shape. The pillars feature inscriptions in Han script.

Beyond the gates lies a large garden. It leads to the main temple. The main temple’s foundation is raised about 0.8 meters above the courtyard. Two ornamental pillars stand guard. Their peaks are crafted into the shape of wine pitchers. These pillars feature decorative carvings and Han script couplets.

The temple’s roof is tiled in a double-layered style. A separating wall is adorned with relief sculptures. These depictions include trúc, mai, đào, and lựu. The three prominent Han characters “Châu Lâm Tự” indicate that this is Chùa Châu Lâm.

The main temple has three connected sections. These sections are the Tiền đường, the thiêu hương, and the thượng điện. These structures form an enclosed space. This design amplifies the vastness and grandeur of the temple’s Tam bảo.

The Tiền đường has five gian. It is constructed with brick walls. Inside, the roof support system shows two unique designs. The central bays feature chồng rường structures. The side bays use simpler kèo quá giang designs. The front corridor spans seven khoảnh hoành. A wooden beam supports the roof. It features carvings of vân mây and hoa lá.

The thiêu hương has two gian. It connects the Tiền đường with the thượng điện. Its roof support has a chồng rường structure. Carvings of dragons and other mythical creatures adorn the kẻ and xà nách.

The thượng điện echoes the style of the Tiền đường. Its chồng rường structure includes columns. The beams are adorned with vân mây and hoa lá. The upper sections feature vân chữ triện. They also have wooden hoành phi inscribed in gold. This enhances the sacred ambiance.

Chùa Châu Lâm is more than just a building. It preserves a rich collection of artifacts. These items include a bronze bell from the Lê dynasty. There is also a khánh đồng from the Nguyễn dynasty. But most importantly, it houses 48 statues. These statues include three Mẫu figures, five Tổ figures, and 40 Buddha figures.

Chùa Châu Lâm has a rich history. It embodies Vietnam’s enduring spirit. It also serves as a haven for cultural preservation. The temple is a testament to the artistry of past generations. Its architecture and artifacts connect us to Vietnam’s vibrant history. It is a place for contemplation, a place for connection and a place for peace. Take a moment to appreciate the beauty that surrounds you. Let the serenity of Chùa Châu Lâm fill your heart.
