“A church built by the workers themselves?” a curious voice whispered. “Imagine that!”.

Right here, before you, stands the Christuskirche. This house of worship has a unique story woven into its very bricks. You see, the Christuskirche wasn’t simply commissioned by the elite. It rose from the collective desire of Augsburg’s hardworking textile workers.

In 1897, the Protestant community in Haunstetten, fueled by a longing for their own place of worship, began a heartfelt fundraising campaign. They toiled tirelessly, their shared dream taking shape brick by brick. Then, in 1899, within the humble walls of the Haunstetter spinning and weaving mill’s caretaker’s house, a beacon of hope emerged. Pastors Dittmar, Walter, and Herbst founded the “Bethaus for Haunstetten-Meringerau” association. Their mission was clear: to build and sustain a sanctuary for Protestants in Haunstetten and Meringerau.

The Christuskirche stands as a testament to their dedication, a symbol of faith forged in the heart of the community.
