Doesn’t the Christuskirche stand a bit off the beaten path? It does. This church in Görlitz is an interesting story of community, faith, and architectural vision.

The Christuskirche wasn’t always here. Before 1938, Rauschwalde, the area we’re in, didn’t have its own church. Locals attended services in neighboring Kunnerwitz. But as Rauschwalde grew, so did the desire for a church of its own.

Imagine Rauschwalde at the turn of the 20th century. The population boomed. More people needed a place to worship. In 1914, the Rauschwalde congregation formed. They used the chapel in the cemetery, but it was too small. It also felt too much like a funeral home for regular worship.

Around that time a local farmer, Gustav Richter, donated land for a new church. However, planning stalled for years. After World War I, the community tried again. The first designs came from architect Hermann Wahlich. But after Wahlich died, Otto Bartning took over.

Bartning was a famous architect. He designed many churches. The Christuskirche became one of his notable works. Bartning designed the Christuskirche in 1936 and 1937. The church was dedicated on June 17, 1938. Before that day it was called Rauschwalde. On this special day it received its new name Christuskirche.

Now, notice how the Christuskirche faces. Most churches face east to west. The Christuskirche faces north to south. Bartning did this to fit the landscape. He wanted to keep views of the Landeskrone mountain open.

Also, observe the tower. It stands slightly apart from the main building. This design element gives the area a unique look. The west facade has no windows. Instead, large buttresses support the structure. The east side, facing the street, features an open entrance.

Construction wasn’t easy. The Third Reich enacted new laws requiring air raid shelters for new buildings. The Christuskirche was no exception. This meant adding a basement shelter. Also, steel was limited. Despite these challenges, the Christuskirche was completed.

Step inside and you’ll notice the simple interior. White walls contrast with the dark wood ceiling. Large windows let in plenty of light. The altar stands before a tall, narrow window. A ceramic font, crafted by Heinz Grunwald, adds a special touch.

One thing that was never realized was a clock with chimes on the tower. The congregation ran out of money.

Today, the Christuskirche is a landmark. It is a testament to Bartning’s skill. It represents the community’s determination. Its simple beauty continues to inspire. The Christuskirche is more than just a building. It’s a symbol of faith. It is a symbol of resilience.
