But the building’s story begins long before 1951. It’s actually much older. The Christuskirche stands on the site of a former synagogue. This synagogue was destroyed. The current building however dates back at least to around 1560. Some believe it may even have been designed by the renowned Hans Vorchheimer. A polygonal choir was added even earlier. This dates back to 1467. The evidence was found in dendrochronological dating. The choir was completed by 1470 and then consecrated.
The church has seen significant renovations. Major repairs took place in 1726 and again in 1976. These renovations helped preserve this historical landmark. These are just the major ones. Countless smaller ones were also undertaken. Each one reflecting the ongoing community investment.
