Did you know that Christus-König-Kirche stands as a testament to faith and resilience? It is located in the northern part of Osnabrück. This church has a story etched in its very walls.

Christus-König-Kirche holds a special place in the hearts of the local Catholic community. The parish is committed to living out the message of God’s love for humanity. They strive to follow the example of Jesus. The parish actively engages with its Lutheran neighbors. They work together with the evangelical-reformed and Romanian-Orthodox communities. Their shared goal is to foster a thriving peaceful environment for everyone in their districts.

Let’s step back in time to 1934. The residents of Haste had long desired their own church. Their dreams came true when Christus-König-Kirche was finally built. Albert Feldwisch-Drentrup designed the church. Dedicating it to Christ the King on October 21 was a bold statement. It was a defiant act against the rising powers of the time. Those powers sought to follow a different leader. Christus-König is the oldest of the parish’s three churches.

Inside Christus-König-Kirche, you will find beautiful works by Ludwig Nolde. He was a local artist from Osnabrück-Haste. His contributions include the Christus figure on the choir wall. Also consider the Marien figure, the Stations of the Cross and the Nativity scene figures.

Tragedy struck in June 1944. A bombing raid severely damaged Christus-König-Kirche. The west side collapsed. The roof was destroyed. If you look closely at the original benches from 1934, you can still see scars. They serve as a reminder of the devastation.

After the Second Vatican Council, changes were made. The artist Walter Mellmann redesigned the altar. He also created the ambo, baptismal font, and tabernacle.

In 2017, a major interior renovation took place. The church reopened on September 23. This happened after five months of construction. The redesigned altar area and the arrangement of the benches invite the community. It encourages a deeper experience of unity with Jesus. It strengthens their connection with one another. Klodwig and Partner, an architectural firm from Münster, oversaw the planning. Madeleine Dietz created memorials for the Lübeck martyrs. These martyrs were remembered in various places. Since its reopening, Christus-König-Kirche has radiated a fresh glow. The church’s blue ceiling brings a modern touch. Hopefully, it will guide the community toward a bright future.

Next to Christus-König-Kirche is the St. Antonius Kindergarten. It is a welcoming place for children and families. Behind the church is the Johannes-Prassek-Haus. This community center is named after Priest Johannes Prassek. He celebrated his first Mass in Christus-König-Kirche in 1937. In 1943, Prassek was arrested by the Gestapo in Lübeck. He was sentenced to death. He was executed with fellow priests Hermann Lange and Eduard Müller. Karl Friedrich Stellbrink also died. They are remembered as the Lübeck martyrs.

Today, Christus-König-Kirche continues to be a beacon of hope. It is a place of worship. It offers various events and activities. Holy Masses are held regularly. There are also special services for families and children. The CredoCafé provides a space for discussion and reflection. Various groups meet in the parish hall. These groups include the CreDur choir, the kfd women’s group, and senior citizens.

As we conclude our visit to Christus-König-Kirche, remember its story. Remember its unwavering faith. This church is more than just a building. It is a living testament to the strength and unity of the community. It is a place where faith is celebrated and where everyone is welcome.
