Could a bollerwagen on a playground birth a church? At Christus Gemeinde Barmbek Nord, the answer is a resounding yes. This vibrant church, nestled in the heart of Barmbek-Nord, has a story as unique as its beginning. Christus Gemeinde Barmbek Nord officially began in the summer of 2003. However, its roots trace back to a humble house church, meeting in Barmbek-Nord since 1986. This small group, an offshoot of a church in Lüneburg, began prayer walks and saw new house churches forming as people came to faith. This growing network became the perfect cradle for a new church. Pastorin Regina Gaßmann, a theology graduate living in Barmbek-Nord, was entrusted with leading the fledgling congregation. They prioritized building relationships through house churches, but also aimed to be a relevant presence within the community. Even before securing their current location above the bustling Fuhlsbüttler Straße, they held monthly meetings at the Rübezahl playground. The playground, with its open space and building, proved ideal for the young families in the initial group. It was also a welcoming space to invite friends and neighbors to various events. They even started a bollerwagen play service on the playground and a mini-club in their apartment, sowing the seeds of community long before they had a dedicated building. In November 2005, Christus Gemeinde Barmbek Nord officially launched in their space above the shops of Fuhlsbüttler Straße. The congregation numbered around 30 adults, a handful of friends, and about 20 children. They began hosting two Alpha courses annually in 2006, witnessing numerous people embrace faith and enrich the church community. Christus Gemeinde Barmbek Nord’s influence extended beyond its walls. They actively participated in neighborhood committees, collaborated with various partners, and consistently worked for the betterment of the community. The church’s growth necessitated the addition of a second floor in 2010. This new space housed children’s rooms, a seminar room, a kitchen, and offices, allowing the third floor to accommodate the expanding congregation for Sunday services. Christus Gemeinde Barmbek Nord continued to innovate. They launched “Conversation, Blessing, and Prayer on the Street” in 2011. A multicultural parent cafe followed in 2013. In 2015, celebrating their 10th anniversary, they founded a scout group (Royal Rangers), which met at the Rübezahl playground. Their work with refugees since 2015 has further strengthened their bonds with the Barmbek community. Today, Christus Gemeinde Barmbek Nord thrives. Their vision is to be a relevant church where people experience God, grow in love, and make a difference. From a bollerwagen on a playground to a bustling community hub, Christus Gemeinde Barmbek Nord’s story is a testament to the power of faith, community, and a little bit of playful innovation.
