“A piece of home disappeared”. That’s what many said when St. Christophorus in Hannover closed. I will tell you its story. It stood here in Stöcken. It served the community for over half a century.
St. Christophorus was more than just a building. It was a place of gathering. It was a symbol of faith for many residents. The church’s story began in the 1950s. The Catholic population in Stöcken grew. A new parish was needed. Before St. Christophorus existed, services were held elsewhere. They took place in a restaurant hall and a chapel.
Finally, a proper church was built. Architects Horst Langer and Andreas Friess designed it. The church was completed in 1963. St. Christophorus was named after the patron saint of drivers. This was fitting. It was near the Volkswagen factory. Other churches near Volkswagen plants also share this patron.
Heinrich Bodenburg laid the cornerstone in 1962. Bishop Heinrich Maria Janssen consecrated it in 1963. St. Christophorus officially became a parish in 1964. For years, Pallottiner priests served the community.
But times changed. In 2006, St. Christophorus became part of the St. Maria parish. In 2009, the Diocese of Hildesheim decided to close it. Discussions with the Lutheran church about taking over the building failed. In 2015, a housing association bought the property.
The plan was to build apartments for elderly and disabled people. Some elements of the church would be preserved. The last service was held in January 2019. Weihbischof Nikolaus Schwerdtfeger led the service. The building was then demolished.
Inside St. Christophorus, there was an altar and pulpit. They were made of basalt lava. Norbert Labenz created the altar cross. Franz Pauli designed the stained-glass windows. A figure of St. Christopher adorned the facade.
The church also had an organ. Westfälischer Orgelbau built it. It was dedicated in 1997. Since 2020, the organ has been in a church in Siegen.
Many items from St. Christophorus found a new home. The pews, confessional boxes, and Stations of the Cross went to Bosnia. They were given to a church in Mrkonjic Grad. That church had been damaged in the Bosnian War. The St. Christopher window went to St. Hedwig in Vinnhorst. Other stained-glass windows will be integrated into the new building.
The closure of St. Christophorus was difficult for many. Some felt they had lost a piece of home. But the community’s spirit lives on. It continues in other churches. The memory of St. Christophorus remains.
