A chilling wind whispers through the trees. It carries the echoes of a forgotten battle. We stand before the monument to Christopher Greene. He was a Rhode Island legislator and soldier. A true hero of the American Revolution.
Christopher Greene’s life was one of courage and unwavering dedication. Descended from prominent New England families he served in the Rhode Island legislature. He joined the Patriot army. He fought bravely at the assault on Quebec. There he was captured. He was a prisoner until 1777. He was promoted to colonel upon his release. He rejoined the Continental Army during the Philadelphia campaign.
Greene’s most famous act of bravery occurred at Fort Mercer. Facing overwhelming British forces he refused to surrender. His defiant words “this fort shall be my tomb” became legendary. He successfully defended the fort inflicting heavy losses on the enemy. This victory earned him a ceremonial sword from the Continental Congress.
Later Greene led the 1st Rhode Island Regiment. This was a unique unit composed of both white and Black soldiers. These Black soldiers had been promised their freedom in exchange for their service. The regiment never reached full strength due to limitations on enlistments and the small slave population of Rhode Island. Despite this they fought with distinction. They participated in the Battle of Rhode Island in 1778.
Tragically Greene’s life ended on May 14 1781. He was killed at the Battle of Pines Bridge in Westchester County New York. Loyalists ambushed his outpost. Greene fought fiercely. He was overwhelmed by numbers. He died from bayonet wounds in hand-to-hand combat. His death was lamented by many including Colonel Henry “Light Horse Harry” Lee.
Christopher Greene’s legacy extends beyond his battlefield achievements. He represented the ideals of freedom and equality. He bravely led a racially integrated unit at a time of immense social division. He is a powerful symbol of courage sacrifice and the fight for liberty. His unmarked grave lay forgotten until 1900.
