Why did the American military loan a site for a church in Frankfurt? The answer lies in the story of Christ the King. Christ the King church in Frankfurt’s Westend-Nord isn’t just a building. It’s a testament to post-war cooperation and evolving communities. After World War II many American military personnel were stationed in the Rhein-Main region. An English-speaking Christian congregation formed. The US Military provided land at the corner of Hansaallee and Miquelallee. The British even donated a Nissen Hut a temporary structure. This became St Christopher’s church. Dedicated on Ash Wednesday 1949 it served a growing number of worshippers. The German Old Catholic Congregation also needed space. They decided to build a joint church a unique collaboration. In 1956 the cornerstone was laid. Documents signed by leaders of both congregations St Christopher’s and St Willibrod’s were buried within. Christ the King was dedicated on August 24 1957. The Division of Women’s Work of the American Episcopal Church provided significant funding for the project. The church was initially shared but in 1985 the Old Catholics moved to Bockenheim. Christ the King became solely Anglican in 1986. Its name was then officially changed. The building however remained. Christ the King has seen seven rectors each serving for several years. The congregation has transformed over the decades. The American military presence decreased. Immigration and refugees arrived many seeking English-language services. Frankfurt’s international nature attracted people from across the globe. Christ the King reflects this multicultural community a truly unique space in Frankfurt. It stands as a living symbol of faith adaptation and international friendship. Its history is a remarkable story in itself a story of cooperation and resilience in a city transformed by war and peace. A story etched into the very bricks of this inspiring building.
